This year, Sean Planchard and I are continuing T.C. Marsh Middle School's Roadmap to College program, the first of its kind in the Dallas Independent School District. Last year, generous financial donors gave their support and allowed 50 future-first generation college students and their parents to experience the trip of a lifetime. They toured nine colleges and universities around Texas and learned how to make college more accessible for themselves. If you’d like to hear one of the many success stories that came from this extraordinary experience, please take a moment to read Alex’s story in the blog she wrote for Teach for America.

Sean is a second year Teach for America teacher; I have finished my commitment with the Teach for America program but have decided to continue serving the students of Dallas in my classroom at T.C. Marsh Middle School, a Title I School. In our city, only one out of every 14 students graduates from college. Statistically, this means that only six of the 85 students I teach on a daily basis will receive a college education. It is our continual goal to change this statistic.

With the support of the Marsh administration, we are planning a second installment of the Roadmap to College tour with some new and exciting additions. We are working with Education Opens Doors, a non-profit recently founded by a Teach For America Alum here in Dallas, to provide our students with Roadmap to Success student manuals and the aligned pilot program, which will teach them to strategically navigate high school as well as increase their college knowledge. We have selected 35 future-first generation college students who will participate in the curriculum and compete to earn one of 20 spots on the Roadmap to College Tour. The tour is now expanded to visit colleges and universities in Texas and Oklahoma.

Join the excitement by donating to these deserving students! They’ll be running bake sales and car washes to fund the trip but it won’t be enough. Suggested donations include the opportunity to fund a half portion of a child’s trip ($550), or even the full amount of $1,100 which would cover transportation, lodging and meals, but ALL contributions are greatly appreciated and tax deductible.

Thank you so much for your consideration and support of this program.
