We can save the Blue Angels -- let's bring them back for SF Fleet Week 2013!
Marc McCabe started the campaign

The Navy announced earlier this year that they're cutting all funding to the Blue Angels, and canceling all planned shows as a result of the U.S. government sequester. Over 60 air shows all over the country have been canceled this year -- including our very own Fleet Week celebration scheduled for Oct 10-14 in San Francisco. They've even been training for it in advance, and the only limitation is their budget.

Last year, over one million people in the SF Bay Area eagerly watched the skies as the Blue Angels zoomed around -- I was one of them. This is a huge bummer for millions of people, all over the country.

So here's a crazy idea: let's get all of our local bay area friends to group together, and find the power to make the Blue Angel show happen! I've been calling around and talked to folks at the Navy and Crowdtilt. Working off of this KQED estimate of the cost of a Blue Angels show, we believe $650k is a good goal to bring the Blue Angels back to SF. We're still working away at confirming with the Navy, but we should know the exact amount soon!

Best of all, if we don't raise our goal, nobody will be charged! That's how Crowdtilt works. So throw in a few bucks! There's NO RISK, and together we can continue this irreplaceable tradition.

For those who haven't experienced Blue Angels, no video will truly convey what it feels like to stand on a roof/bridge/beach/hill in San Francisco and literally feel a fighter plane power past only a couple hundred feet overhead. It brings the entire city together. The Blue Angel pilots are also devastated about missing this yearly tradition that inspires and delights children and adults alike.

Please share.

Hello Blue Angels Contributors!

I wish I was writing to you with better news but after lengthy discussions with the Navy, it is now apparent we won't be able to bring the Blue Angels back to SF this year. The main reasons being that the Military couldn't find an appropriate way to actually accept donations and most importantly, that the pilots have not been training and no longer have enough time to get ready for a 2013 show.

However, I am pleased to say the Navy has heard us(!) and are in fact very moved by our earnest desire to see the Blue Angels fly. They tried very hard to make this work. I've even had a Blue Angels pilot 'friend' me on Facebook.

I want to thank each of you for your incredible support in the face of long odds. I also want to assure each of you that you will NOT be charged in any way. I hope you've enjoyed the ride! Until next year... :)

Best,
Marc McCabe
